Productivity is the effectiveness of productive effort as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input. Many of us aspire to increase our productivity. Why actually? What’s your motivation behind becoming more productive?
When I look at it, I see two options. You might want to become more productive to
either do the same amount of work in less time or
you do more work in the same amount of time.
What is it for you? Knowing your answer will help you stay motivated.
Let me give you an example. When I worked in corporate finance, I typically left the office around 6:30 pm while some colleagues stayed till 7:30 pm or even past 8 pm (And no worries, we were not early birds). I wanted to leave work on time because I had a very active social life and either went to sports or creative classes or met up with friends.
In other words, I was focused on the first option and wanted to leave on time to have sufficient time for my social life.
What impact did that have on my approach at work? I was extremely focused on getting my tasks done during that time. What has the highest priority? Which meetings are required to get all the needed input? What is just the cherry on the cake? Having commitments in the evening helped me to remain focused and get things done! If I finished my tasks earlier, even better!
Ever since I have been going down the entrepreneurial road, I switched to option 2. I am eager to get more and more done in the same amount of time. Let’s look at podcasting as an example. Once I got faster at editing podcast episodes, I took on new tasks such as writing newsletters or preparing video snippets for social media. The moment I get faster at a task, I add a new one to my list.
Understanding your objective with productivity will help you trigger your motivation. Should you plan activities outside of work to motivate yourself to complete your job on time? If so, what are those activities?
Or is it rather important to increase your playing field and add more and more responsibilities to your list? In that case, your growing impact is likely to motivate you to go the extra mile.
It all depends on where you are in your life and what's important to you. If you struggle to define your top priorities or to be productive, we should talk.
I also had an absolutely inspiring converation about productivitiy with Naveen Samala this week. What can you do to become more productive?
Naveen is the definition of productivity. He's not only an IT leader driving business transformation but also the founder of The Guiding Voice which is one of the fastest-growing Tech podcasts based out of India. Curious?
That’s it for today!
