Little kids ask so many questions all day long. Why is this? Why is that? They have this zest of curiosity which is just amazing! As life goes on, the questions might slow down or even stop. Deep down, however, I bet the curiosity is still there! Maybe it’s time to ignite the fire of curiosity and ask more questions once again.
Why? Asking questions is a powerful tool and an important ingredient for successful communication. As my podcast guest this week phrased it so well “Questions have the power to unlock insight!”
Questions are powerful. If you don’t know something and you don’t ask, you will most likely make assumptions. What if those assumptions are wrong? Then all follow-up conclusions are off as well.
A story comes to mind that a friend told me many years ago.
Her friend, Paolo, enjoyed cooking very much. He was proud to cook his grandma’s recipes, “I cook everything the way she cooks it. I even chop the meat in half when I boil it in a pot.” My friend got curious and asked Paolo about the reasons behind it. Paolo didn’t know. When he saw his grandma next time, he asked her about it. And what did he find out? “Well, in the old days, our pots were much smaller than today, and the meat would not fit otherwise!”
Cute story, right? The point is that if we don’t know something, we make assumptions that could be wrong. That’s why asking more why questions is so empowering. You might be surprised what you will find out.
Now I am curious. What will you ask today?
